Since then, she helped to draft legislation on the Alteration of Sex Descriptors, and the Promotion of Equality. In an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/interaction.org.au\/15234\/eighth-day-intersex-sally-gross\/\">interview with InterAction<\/a>, Sally spoke about her influence on intersex law:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0757c9d7a27c508a99d0e1e6dc3ddd52\">\u201cSince 2000, I\u2019ve drafted amendments bearing on intersex for the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alteration_of_Sex_Description_and_Sex_Status_Act,_2003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alteration of Sex Descriptions Bill<\/strong><\/a><\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Promotion_of_Equality_and_Prevention_of_Unfair_Discrimination_Act,_2000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 2000<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, and these have been lobbied into law. Getting intersex into the\u00a0<em>Promotion of Equality Act<\/em>\u00a0is the weightier of the two. Lobbying persuaded the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sahrc.org.za\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South African Human Rights Commission<\/a>\u00a0that intersex is a serious human rights issue. This yielded an SAHRC workshop three years back that looked at the imposition of genital surgery on intersex infants and children, and the possible need for legislation.\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1309\" height=\"1330\" src=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sally-Gross-Painting_Ray-Smidt-Gross.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sally-Gross-Painting_Ray-Smidt-Gross.jpeg 1309w, https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sally-Gross-Painting_Ray-Smidt-Gross-295x300.jpeg 295w, https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sally-Gross-Painting_Ray-Smidt-Gross-148x150.jpeg 148w, https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Sally-Gross-Painting_Ray-Smidt-Gross-768x780.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1309px) 100vw, 1309px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Painting of Sally by her brother Ray Smidt-Gross<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sally\u2019s last communication had been with prominent New Zealand-based intersex activist, Mani Bruce Mitchell, a friend who had posted<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/6gc520\">&nbsp;a GoFundMe appeal<\/a>&nbsp;for help on Gross\u2019s behalf in January of the same year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sally\u2019s founding of and work as part of<a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/2008-founding-of-intersex-south-africa\/\">&nbsp;Intersex South Africa (ISSA)<\/a>had severely depleted her own limited resources and she fell into poor health. The tragedy of her death as a result of this poor health affected communities all over the world. Many obituaries* followed her death.
