{"id":2256,"date":"2016-05-01T13:44:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-01T13:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/?p=2256"},"modified":"2025-03-25T16:05:17","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:05:17","slug":"publication-of-ending-pathological-practices-against-trans-and-intersex-bodies-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/publication-of-ending-pathological-practices-against-trans-and-intersex-bodies-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"2016 \u2014 Publication of &#8216;Ending Pathological Practices Against Trans and Intersex Bodies in Africa&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2016 \u2014 Publication of &#8216;Ending Pathological Practices Against Trans and Intersex Bodies in Africa&#8217;<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, South Africa\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/founding-of-iranti-south-africa\/\"> <em><strong>Iranti<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, as well as the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ngo\/\">Global Action for Trans Equality (GATE)<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/weareaptn.org\/\">Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN)<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genrespluriels.be\/IMG\/pdf\/STP2012_Information_Leaflet.pdf\"><em>Stop Trans Pathologization 2012 (STP)<\/em><\/a> team, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/tgeu.org\/\">Transgender Europe (TGEU)<\/a><\/em>, hosted a workshop to share knowledge and learning and to form advocacy strategies against the pathologisation of trans and intersex people in Africa based on the World Health Organization (WHO)\u2019s International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/standards\/classifications\/classification-of-diseases\">Classification of Diseases (ICD)<\/a>. The advocacy booklet, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/iranti.org.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Ending-Pathological-Practices-Against-Trans-And-Intersex-Bodies-in-Africa-Toolkit-2017.pdf\">Ending Pathological Practices Against Trans and Intersex Bodies in Africa<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0was published as a result of the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"394\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3141\" style=\"width:1155px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled.png 394w, https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Untitled-222x300.png 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the introduction of the booklet, the goal of the publication<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1\">&#8220;is to create a basic, accessible and user-friendly tool for understanding the links between access to gender affirming health-care, human rights, depathologisation of trans and gender diverse identities, and the current review process of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The ICD is an international classification that has been developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). It contains a complex list of diseases, disorders, injuries, and factors influencing contact with healthcare services.
