2007 \u2014 Formation of Rainbow Identity Association (RIA), Botswana<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Skipper Mogapi and a handful of self-identified trans and intersex persons formed a support group in Botswana in 2007 that would later be known as the Rainbow Identity Association (RIA). The founding of RIA<\/a> was a result of the influence of the awareness raised at the ARC International<\/a><\/em> conference in Johannesburg in December 2007 and the meeting of the Coalition of African Lesbians (CAL)<\/a><\/em> feminist institute in Mozambique in February 2008. RIA officially registered in 2010 as the first trans and intersex persons and community in Botswana, and began operating independently in September 2011, after using Gender DynamiX<\/a><\/strong> as its fiscal host since 2007.  RIA is an NGO advocating for human rights of people who identify as transgender and intersex in Botswana. It was founded out of lack of safe space for transgender and intersex persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In announcing the formation of RIA, Mogapi said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We aim to create open and safe spaces for transgender communities where human rights values are respected and upheld so that transgender people can find their voices. We want to educate the general public on issues of sexuality, gender identity, and to facilitate the creation of stakeholder forums nationally to assist in the dissemination of information.\u201d<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
