{"id":2074,"date":"2007-12-26T12:13:00","date_gmt":"2007-12-26T12:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/?p=2074"},"modified":"2025-10-03T18:35:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T16:35:10","slug":"december-2007-first-african-arc-international-conference-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/december-2007-first-african-arc-international-conference-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"December 2007 \u2014 First African ARC International Conference, South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/july-2005-gender-dynamix-gdx-founded-south-africa\/\">Gender DynamiX (GDX)<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcinternational.co.za\/\"><em>ARC International<\/em><\/a> conference in Johannesburg in December 2007. This was the first time that ARC held a conference in Africa, and it was at this conference that many self-identified trans people from other countries and trans-African activists met in person. This conference played a significant role in the preliminary understanding of trans in Africa, as the conference\u2019s awareness-raising enabled African activists to have a new understanding of trans identities and trans-related issues. After the conference, a number of African activists contacted GDX to discuss their own awareness and autonomous claiming of trans as an identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact and significance of this trans awareness resulted in the founding of a trans and intersex organisation in Uganda early in 2008 (organisation name withheld to protect its members) and also led to the<a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/?cool_timeline=february-2008-gdx-presentation-to-coalition-of-arican-lesbians-cal-feminist-institute-mozambique\"> unfolding of a very tense regional feminist meeting in Mozambique<\/a> in 2008.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gender DynamiX (GDX) attended the ARC International conference in Johannesburg in December 2007.
