Men outside the club <a href=\"https:\/\/thefword.org.uk\/2008\/06\/shoot_lezitaban\/\">called them <em>izitabane<\/em><\/a>,* referring to their gender identity. In resistance, Daisy and her friends shouted back, asking them to stop insulting them by calling them <em>izitabane.<\/em> The men then started shooting at Daisy and her friends, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/thefword.org.uk\/2008\/06\/shoot_lezitaban\/\">Daisy\u2019s death<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-pink-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ca88f74cf138f483d708e943d4082c00 wp-block-paragraph\">* \u2018<em>Izitabane\u2019<\/em> is a Zulu word which roughly translates as \u201chermaphrodite\u201d**. <em>Izitabane <\/em>is a derogatory slang term. More recently, the Zulu word \u2018<em>stabane<\/em>\u2019 became a more widely used derogatory term referring to any LGBTIQ+ person, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-pink-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f9e88ab3e4239bfbc45613c1a46ac31c wp-block-paragraph\">** The term \u201chermaphrodite\u201d was a scientific description of organisms (plants and animals) that have male and female reproductive organs. The term was also used to describe human beings, and outside of the medical context became derogatory, and an insult.
