The African Regional Sexuality Resource Centre (ARSRC) invited Liesl Theron, as director of Gender DynamiX (GDX), to be their guest during the “Beginning of a Global Dialogue on Transgender Rights” discussion. The meeting took place in New York and was hosted by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The paper Liesl presented at the meeting was extracted from her article, “Transgender or Detransgendered in Africa?^”*

This presentation was probably one of the first times that international LGBTIQ+ and human rights activists, and people in academic circles were confronted with the lived reality and struggles of trans people in Africa. This meeting gave Liesl her first opportunity to meet and network with trans activists from other countries.
