Victor was not home at the time of the raid and the police confiscated documents and arbitrarily arrested Yvonne Oyhoo, who happened to be at Victor\u2019s house at the time. After suffering humiliating and degrading treatment from the police, Yvonne was released on the condition that she had to return the following morning with the chairperson of SMUG.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uganda is known to have a zero-tolerance policy towards homosexuality and on 5 July 2005, the Ugandan government voted for a constitutional amendment to the effect that \u201cmarriage is lawful only if entered into between a man and woman\u201d and that it was \u201cunlawful for same-sex couples to marry.\u201d&nbsp; During this time, when mainstream media and many AIDS activists articulated homophobic viewpoints, Victor continued to speak out as an individual and as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexual_Minorities_Uganda#:~:text=Victor%20Mukasa%2C%20a%20trans%20man,Kaival%20restaurant%20and%20Internet%20cafe\">co-founder<\/a> and chairperson of <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/3-march-2004-founding-of-sexual-minorities-uganda-smug-uganda\/\">Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG)<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the raid, Mukasa publicly declared his intent to sue the Ugandan government for violation of his and Yvonne\u2019s human rights. Soon after this, he started getting threats from government officials to withdraw the case. He went into hiding with the help of Amnesty International and several other regional and international human rights organisations, first within Uganda and eventually in South Africa until the trial started. Mukasa <a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/court-rules-in-favour-of-victor-mukasa-uganda\/\">won the court case<\/a> on 22 December 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Victor Mukasa, human rights defender, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2009\/06\/18\/ugandan_activist_punished_for_transgender_identity.html\"> activist from Uganda<\/a> claimed his identity as a transgender lesbian and started speaking out in the local media about the oppression of LGBTIQ+ people in Uganda in around 2002.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Victor_Mukasa_About_pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-903\" style=\"width:779px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Victor_Mukasa_About_pic.jpg 300w, https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Victor_Mukasa_About_pic-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Victor_Mukasa_About_pic-250x250.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 2005 \u2014 Trans and LGBTQIA+ Activist, Victor Mukasa, Sues Government, Uganda On 20 July 2005, trans man and LGBTQIA+ activist Victor Mukasa\u2019s house was raided by the police without a search warrant.\u00a0 They were looking for documents relating to the activities of SMUG.
