{"id":3752,"date":"2007-07-01T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-01T14:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/?p=3752"},"modified":"2025-10-03T18:35:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T16:35:21","slug":"july-2007-house-of-rainbow-and-gender-dynamix-reach-out-to-nigerian-trans-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/july-2007-house-of-rainbow-and-gender-dynamix-reach-out-to-nigerian-trans-women\/","title":{"rendered":"July 2007 \u2014 House of Rainbow and Gender DynamiX Reach Out to Nigerian Trans Women, Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">July 2007 \u2014 House of Rainbow and Gender DynamiX Reach Out to Nigerian Trans Women, Nigeria<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2007 Nigerian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houseofrainbow.org\/team-2\">Reverend Jide Macaulay<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houseofrainbow.org\/\"><strong><em>House of Rainbow<\/em><\/strong><\/a> attended the <strong><em>International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA)<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/?cool_timeline=may-2007-ilga-establishes-a-pan-african-ilga-pai\">meeting in Johannesburg<\/a>. This ILGA conference presented the opportunity for organisations to meet and network and important organisational relationships formed. The conference was the beginning of the alliance between House of Rainbow and <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/gender-dynamix-gdx-founded-south-africa\/\">Gender DynamiX<\/a><\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>(GDX)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting with the 7 trans women in Lagos, Nigeria came about after a discussion <a href=\"https:\/\/transintersexhistory.africa\/liesl-theron\/\">Liesl Theron<\/a> from GDX had with Jide during the ILGA meeting. At the time, Liesl had existing plans to visit Nigeria to attend a course and Jide offered to meet with her while in Lagos in order to introduce her to the trans women he knew. The meeting in Lagos between Liesl and the trans women was an informal discussion to share struggle experiences, learn from each other, and to create networks for allyship.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2a41d5474fdc8eb20cc8faef4303ee5e\"><em>\u201cUnfortunately, I do not have any photos or names of the seven trans women we met, many of them have either emigrated or passed away under differing circumstances. This is a dark part of our existence. We were forced to shut down in 2008, many dispersed and many are no longer part of our organisation, all of this happened 16 years ago. I recall so many things from memory but it has been a difficult mission as we have suffered bereavements that are unimaginable.\u201d<\/em> \u2014 Rev. Reverend Jide Macaulay started House of Rainbow as a weekly gathering for LGBTIQ+ Christians in Lagos, which the media soon described as &#8216;Nigeria&#8217;s First Gay Church&#8217;. Our first message to those dealing with religious homophobia is that it is OK to be LGBTIQ+. We provide support and encouragement, especially to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer (LGBTIQ+) people of colour, that it is OK to be LGBTIQ+ and be a person of faith. Through one to one support, group gatherings and training workshops, we help people over time to heal and celebrate they are.
