The African Regional Sexuality Resource Centre (ARSRC) invited Liesl Theron, as director of Gender DynamiX to be their guest during the Beginning of a Global Dialogue on Transgender Rights discussion. The meeting was hosted by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. The paper presented in New York on 17 April 2008 was extracted from the article Transgender or detransgendered in Africa? written by Liesl.
Take note of how language changed over the years. Language and terminology used at the time of writing this article were very different than how we are used to writing in a sensitive manner, regarding referring to people with the words “transsexual” and “transgender” as a noun, and the language of “FTM” etc. However, this speech, given by Liesl in New York, was probably one of the first times for people in academic circles and international activists to be confronted with realities in the lives of trans people living in various places in Africa. This meeting in New York gave Liesl the opportunity to meet and network for the first time with trans activists from other countries.
