The Transgender Network of Liberia (TNOL) was founded in 2014 by Karishma Richards-Kwofie. The organisation was initially under the umbrella of Stop AIDS in Liberia (SAIL). When TNOL sought registration status as a legal entity in order to rent office space, open a bank account and apply for funding at the Liberia Business Registry – their application was rejected for the reason that the organisation’s activities are illegal in the country. Furthermore, their application which was handed in in person, was meted out with transphobic discrimination as the activists who handed the application in, were detained for 3 hours. While in detention, people who entered the detention area would take photos of the activists, who also made discriminatory remarks, such as “they should be placed in a cell to die”, and “they should be killed for not accepting the body that God gave them”.
