The first part of the second year of the exchange program begins in Uganda.
This was a watershed workshop and the number of activists grew beyond the capacity of the Exchange Program. It was during this Exchange that Themba Nkosi shared that he had started a youth support group – aGender, in Soweto: Johannesburg-which was the result of the work capacity building work of the Exchange Program. During this exchange workshop, the trans feminine participants fully stepped out of the shadows and claimed space and the need for recognition, beyond being consumed by the role and space trans masculine activists took up at the time. Debate sparked between the trans women and trans men. It is during this meeting that Leigh Anne van der Merwe announced the founding of Social, Health and Empowerment Feminist Collective of Transgender and Intersex Women of Africa (S.H.E)
