Social, Health and Empowerment Feminist Collective of Transgender and Intersex Women of Africa (S.H.E) was formally established by Leigh Ann van der Merwe.
S.H.E’s most prominent mandate is to work with a Trans Feminist lense, nationally and through the African continent. Part of the founding reasons derived from the Exchange Program earlier in May 2011, hosted in Uganda when the trans feminine activists and trans masculine activists were in robust discussions about the power imbalance in Africa within the trans movement, seeing mostly trans organizations led by trans masculine persons, and with no opportunities for trans feminine activists. S.H.E fully adopted Feminist principles and works with that intention and approach.
