The South African Film and Publications Board banned the intersex film “XXY”* on the grounds that the film portrays child pornography. The Spanish film with English subtitles is produced by an Argentinian filmmaker and tells the story of a teenager  (15 years of age). The Out in Africa (OIA) gay and lesbian film festival, which planned to screen the film as part of the 15th annual film festival, indicated that they will appeal the Film and Publication Board’s decision and will take legal action against the Board.

 * Please take note that there is a print error in the linked article as they mention the youth’s main character is transgender when in reality he is intersex.  The title of the film, XXY, also indicates the topic of the film to be intersex.
