2020 — Founding of Cairo 52 Legal Research Institute, Egypt/MENA Region
Founded in 2020, Cairo 52 Legal Research Institute primarily targets transgender and gender-diverse individuals, alongside the broader LGBTQ+ community and sex workers in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Their efforts are particularly focused on those experiencing intersectional discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, and choices related to bodily autonomy. Since the group’s establishment, they have implemented targeted projects for the community, including the “Trans Clinic,” which provides medical support, and a strategic litigation initiative for “Legal Gender Recognition.” The organisation’s operational base is in Egypt/MENA region, and its registration base is in Estonia. It was registered on 26 June 2023 in Estonia due to security concerns in Egypt.
The organisation operates at the intersection of legal defense, research, and advocacy. Its main pillars include:
- Legal Aid & Strategic Litigation: Offering pro bono legal defense for individuals arrested under “Vice Laws” and litigating for Legal Gender Recognition (LGR).
- Research & Documentation: Producing evidence-based reports on digital entrapment, healthcare access, and legal violence.
- Grassroots Services: Administering the “Trans Clinic” to enhance access to gender-affirming healthcare.
- Advocacy: Engaging with United Nations mechanisms (UPR/individual communications) to contest state violence in the MENA region.
