Founded on 12 September 2017, UNITY Association Togo helps young trans people in Togo by advocating for their psychological and social well-being through cultural events, recreational and educational outings, educational talks, focus groups and assistance with socio-professional integration. UNITY also works towards fighting stigmatisation discrimination and all forms of gender-based violence. The association is based in Lomé and has branches in Aného and Kara. UNITY was registered in 2019.

According to the Association, from their website:

“The LGBT movement in Togo has undergone many changes since its creation. Despite this structuring of the LGBT movement and the changes made to improve the living conditions of LGBT people in Togo, Trans* people and their specific needs are not taken into account by existing classic LGBT associations. The majority of actions are either MSM-centered or do not take into account the specific needs related to Trans* people in terms of health and human rights. This is due on the one hand to a lack of knowledge of trans identity and on the other hand to a low visibility of Trans* people in the evolution of the LGBT movement.”

  • Formulating approaches to solutions to the socio-legal and professional problems of trans people
  • Fighting for medical and psychological support for trans people on hormone therapy
  • Contributing to access to prevention, care, hormonal treatments and HIV and STIs for trans people
