Trans Bantu Zambia (TBZ), was formed on 14 September 2008 to bring about an end to discrimination against the trans community in Zambia. It is a youth-led non-profit organisation whose development objective is the improvement of the socioeconomic, political and legal status of trans-diverse and intersex people in Zambia.
TBZ runs a variety of projects that aim to increase trans-diverse and intersex persons access to rights responsive public health, socio-economic, and cultural services in Zambia. Their key focus areas are public health, human rights advocacy, civic education, social inclusion and policy litigation. The organisation uses different channels to empower and educate key populations through providing gender affirming sexual and reproductive and mental health care services as well as addressing and documenting injustices that affect minority groups within the country.
Trans Bantu Zambia (TBZ) officially became a registered entity in August 2012. However, they stick to celebrating their birthday each year on the 14th of September.
TBZ was officially recognised as a company limited by guarantee by the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA). To kick things off, they had some support from the Transitioning Africa (TA) project. Their first strategic plan was supported by the Transitioning Africa (TA) project, of which TBZ was one of the small number of Trans organisations that were recipients of the TA sub-granting initiative.
In their early days, TBZ used an info brochure to spread awareness and advocate for their cause. Their vision was crystal clear — they aimed for a fair world where everyone’s rights were respected. They wanted equality and fairness to be the norm, with justice accessible and enjoyed by everyone, including trans and intersex individuals.

Vision
A world where trans-diverse and intersex people enjoy human rights and effectively contribute to development in Zambia, where their society is well-informed about their experiences, and where they have space to demand equitable access to social opportunities and justice without fear, prejudice, and discrimination.
Mission
To contribute to an enabling environment where trans-diverse and intersex people enjoy their full potential. This result can only be achieved through advocacy, education, empowerment, and work with policy and law in Zambia.
