March 2021 — Founding of Trans Guardians Alliance (TGA), South Africa

Founded in March 2021 by a trans man, Donwell Mpofu, Trans Guardians Alliance (TGA) is a South African organisation working with LGBTQIA+ migrants and asylum seekers, with a particular focus on trans individuals and LGBTQIA+ parents and their children. The organisation provides holistic support services for displaced LGBTQIA+ migrants, including emergency shelter, access to healthcare and documentation, psychosocial support, early childhood education, and advocacy for inclusive migration and protection frameworks. TGA was registered in October 2021 as a non-profit organisation.

Vision

A South Africa where displaced LGBTQIA+ people can live freely, safely, and with dignity, enjoying equal access to rights, services, and opportunities.

Mission

To protect, support, and empower displaced LGBTQIA+ communities through direct services, advocacy, and the creation of safe, affirming spaces for healing, growth, and leadership.

Goals/Objectives

  • Provide life-saving shelter and basic support to displaced LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • Advocate for inclusive migration policies and practices.
  • Strengthen the capacity and visibility of trans and queer refugees.
  • Support LGBTQIA+ parents and children through inclusive early childhood education and family-centred services.
