March 2024 — “World Untold: Echoes of Silence” Stage Production by Intersex Nigeria
Unlike the traditional advocacy that relies on reports, policy briefs or legal arguments, in March 2024, Intersex Nigeria employed storytelling to explore the realities of intersex people in Nigeria. The organisation transformed a theatre stage in Abuja into a commemorative site, resistance and public education. Through the debut of its stage production, “World Untold: Echoes of Silence”, audiences were invited to witness stories that have too often remained hidden behind stigma, secrecy and silence. More than a theatrical performance, the play marked an important moment in the history of intersex advocacy in Africa, demonstrating how art can preserve lived experiences while inspiring social change.
The choice of the title reflects realities the production brings to the stage. “World Untold” speaks to thousands of intersex stories that have gone overlooked or unheard, while “Echoes of Silence” reflects the lingering effects of secrecy, shame and exclusion experienced by many intersex people in families, communities and healthcare systems. The play challenges both by giving a voice to intersex experiences. It transforms untold stories into public testimony and replaces silence with dialogue, inviting audiences to witness intersex lives while questioning long-held assumptions and recognising the dignity and humanity of intersex people.
Throughout the show, audiences encounter themes of identity, family expectations, social exclusion, religion, resilience and self-determination. The performance illustrates how intersex persons navigate social pressures while seeking acceptance and dignity. The emotional burden carried by parents and families who are frequently influenced by misinformation, fear and societal expectations is neatly exposed on this stage. Viewers were not only dared to question cultural norms and medical practices that have historically marginalized intersex people but also reflect on the consequences of silence and stigma. All this is presented through relatable characters rather than abstract concepts.
The production was staged before an audience of approximately 700 people, bringing together a diverse audience including representatives of the government, members of the National Human rights commission, healthcare professionals, psychologists, human rights defenders, civil society organisations, intersex people and members of the wider public.
As organisations across Africa explore new approaches to advocacy, Intersex Nigeria’s World Untold: Echoes of Silence demonstrates that story telling can change hearts and minds as effectively as policy papers move institutions. It reminds us that history is not preserved only in official documents or legislation. It is also found in performances on stage like these.
