The Transgender Network of Liberia (TNOL) was founded by Karishma Richards-Kwofie in 2014. The organisation was initially under the umbrella of Stop AIDS in Liberia (SAIL). When TNOL sought registration status as a legal entity in order to rent office space, open a bank account, and apply for funding at the Liberia Business Registry, their application was rejected for the reason that the organisation’s activities are illegal in the country. Furthermore, when delivering the application in person, the activists met with transphobic discrimination and were detained for 3 hours. While in detention, people who entered the detention area took photos of the activists and also made discriminatory remarks, such as “They should be placed in a cell to die”, and “They should be killed for not accepting the body God gave them”.
